For the 'fuse' like type i need to find or create a type which is all joined together... here are a few below.
Using Neon for the word EXPLODE, drawing over the word using pen tool so i can create joins to letters how and where i want them. The bomb needs to connect last so it is the only thing left.
Object imported into Photoshop, eroding the type layer by layer (stop motion animation) using scatter brush to erode text so it looks like the end of a fuse alight.

Import into AE retaining all layers > sequence layers
The letters exploding out from the bomb at the end and the white flash are created on AE.
