Re- Illustrated

I decided that the simple imagery used on the last design was too plain, by sketching the objects using crosshatch shading techniques it would add an element of eeriness to the work, a darker tone to the books.

I need to limit the colour palette aswell... possible representing the dark/light nature of the story.
Each book would use one additional colour.... look at where this would be.

The idea for Red Riding Hood was to concentrate on the eyes and mouth of Red Riding and the Wolf, these will be the elements that are hidden and revealed.

Creating patterns for book covers

I drew a few different variations of the key imagery before choosing which ones to take forward into the design.

Puffin provided the template to work to so I started to work straight onto the layout given.

I added the circles below to show where the cut outs would be, this helped to line up the illustrations and make sure none of them crossed over.

Finished layouts for illustrations..... I've shown how they would be viewed on the book but their actually printed layout both sets of illustrations would be on the same page.

Starting to add colour

Black background? I feel it looks abit too much for the small illustrations, but I will play around with coloured backgrounds later on.

The illustrations were proving difficult to colour in using photoshop so I decided to create vectors from them in illustrator.

Finished layout with vectored illustrations instead of just handrawn, I feel that the covers look quite simple, yet maybe this will change when i see the book in motion. Also it still needs the title on so this will add more to the design too.

Playing with interactive concepts

I looked at using type to interact with the book covers but I couldn't come up with a full range as I want them to connect together.

This idea shows how the person reading the story becomes the interactive part, how you hold the book makes you engage with the product.

here i have explored variations of interactive methods, these would be simple pop ups, pull outs, peel backs to show to HIDE and REVEAL the darker imagery in the story.

Looking closer at how this could work

How could the bookmark be interactive aswell above
