OUGD102- 100. Collect> Categorise> Communicate

For the 100 brief i based my research on clocks, this is because i like clock rooms, collections and styles of clocks, i like to see how they have developed through time, how time came about, how/ why we record time, what we do with our time. During my research it was sometimes difficult not to go too deep with some of the research, especially when it came to the scientific side of time.

100 Objects
The objects i collected were mainly clocks and watches, but i also looked on other ways of recording time such as calenders, diaries, journals. I also collected clock parts and mechanical pieces.
-i really liked comparing the watches within my collection, it was interesting to see how many styles i had and which watch belonged to which person.

100 Facts
The facts i collected were a mixture of my own facts (primary research) such as what i do with my time, how many clocks i see in a typical day. Secondary research found in books and on the internet such as scientific facts on measuring time, time zones, history of measuring time, dates in time.

100 Opinions
I found opinions the easiest to collect as i constructed a questionnaire to find personal opinions on time, i tried to avoid the obvious questions and ask more abstract questions such as:
What does time look like?
What does time smell like?
What does time feel like?
What does time sound like?
I got some very interesting answers to these questions, it was interesting to see the contrast in answers such as... what does time smell like? new books/ mould

100 ways to categorise
-Colour
-Material
-Size
-Purpose
...

As i started researching further into clocks i decided to expand my research into clock and watch parts, i found it very interesting to see what was inside a clock, what was making it tick! After a Quicktime/ Final Cut workshop i developed a quick film to show a watch being built beginning with the seperate watch parts then the watch being put together then it starting to work.

Designing watch parts...
I designed all the parts using illustrator, they are all to actual size and are of different styles and materials.

Watch Straps

Watch Faces
Watch Hands
Swatches. I wanted to collect material and colour swatches to show what is available for the watches to be made in. It allows the watch to be more unique and the customer the ability to personalise the watch further.

OUGD102 What if?

This was a group brief in which we had to find and solve a problem in Leeds. This problem had to be derived from similarities found in our categories:
memories
change in time
historic vs modern
playing around
childish
outdoors
rural and home backgrounds
leeds

A lot of our categories were to do with time so we started to research into the history of Leeds to see how it had changed which led us to looking into social attitudes to Leeds between the younger and older society. Mainly researching what new students thought of Leeds and whether they knew any of the History of the city. We found that students knew a lot about nights out, shopping etc. but not a lot about things going on out of Leeds city center. This information was not being targetted at the students where as flyers for nights out were being handed out to them everyday.

From the information collected in a questionnaire we researched and gathered together information on events in Leeds. We decided to narrow the search to Art events and to specify the target audience as Leeds Art College first years only, this was based on the results from the questionnaire.

The tourist center in Leeds and the Leeds Live it Love it website also contained all of this information but it was not being reached by the students so our plan was to draw out the information needed and delivery it straight to the students.

We did a survey to see how students would rather receive information and e-mails scored highest so this is the way in which we would get people interested. A website would be an excellent way of presenting and updating the information although this has shown through the city council website that it doesn't work. Due to this we have developed a Facebook page instead, nearly all students have a Facebook and check it frequently so this information would be seen daily/weekly.

Although our outcomes worked and had the desired affect on the students i feel that our project was not strong enough... was it really an issue? I think we could have picked a greater issue to deal with which would have allowed us to in turn create a stronger outcome.
