Practical Development

I will record all my research on my design context blog as a resource to continually re-address and review throughout my project. I will record all of my design ideas on my design practice blog, including any design variations and discontinued idea paths. I will get feedback every week in the form of crit workshops aswell as asking other design students for their advice. I will then evaluate the feedback and progress on my ppd blog.

Research

Primary
Cafe's,
restaurants,
collecting my own material throughout the city

Secondary
Dieline- packaging

Practical Development

Continuing skill building on software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, use new software skills on Dreamweaver for website side of the project. I would like to use traditional printing methods within this project which will mean allocating time to screen print, this will be near the end of my project when the design is finalised. Also my crafting skills will be needed be the packaging, this is something I need to improve on to create a professional end piece.

Brief

I will be responding to the Mutton Quad brief from ISTD, this will allow me to create type based designs for the food industry.

Statement of Intent:

I would like to produce a professional piece of food packaging design, that through research and experimentation gives me a greater understanding of this area of retail design which will get me ready for industrial experience. Areas that I will improve throughout this project are: software skills, crafting and conceptual skills. 4 weeks its a short amount of time to produce a substantial amount of work of a professional standard so I intend to keep on track with my blog, and my awareness of time.

PRODUCT: Food Packaging
Range: Range of 5-6 food packages and design continued throughout the interiors of the store
Distribution: Mostly print based media with website (for screen element)

PRODUCE: Brand, 5-6 Food packages, interior attributes (menu's, serviettes, wallpaper), website
PROPOSE: An event launch for the cafe, other product packages.

Rationale:

For this brief I have chosen to design for the food retail industry, focusing mainly on food packaging and store interior.

I have chosen this brief as it is another retail brief and will give me more experience in the design for retail sector which is the area I aim to go into. Due to this it will give me another piece for my portfolio and allow me to explore into food retail which is something I have never delved into before therefore broadening my knowledge of the retail industry.
I have decided to design for a café instead of a restaurant as this enables me to focus on food packaging which is a strong interest of mine, as well as looking at store interior and how the design can continue through other means.

I have decided to keep the project type based as it makes the brief more specific and allows me to direct my design ideas straight away. I have never designed for food before and would like to experiment with how food and type could work together.

Selecting a Brief Workshop

5 Briefs chosen- Reasons why

The Body Shop-
Retail, Packaging, Working with an existing brand, structured brief, creating an experience
Mutton Quad-
Food/ Retail industry, creating an experience,
Fedrigoni-
Audience being Fashion Industry, Crafting, Editorials
78rpm -mp3-
Music industry, personal experience, retail item, music videos
Dixon Baxi-
motion graphics, idents...

I AM AWARE OF WHAT DRAWS ME TO BRIEF, EITHER THE SUBJECT BEING RETAIL/ FASHION/ FOOD, OR THE ABILITY TO PRODUCE AN OUTCOME FOR SALE IN THESE INDUSTRIES. ALSO PACKAGING/ INTERIOR AND (THE OFF ONE OUT) MOTION GRAPHICS. ALSO I LIKE VERY RIGID BRIEFS AS I FIND THIS ALLOWS ME O BE MORE CREATIVE, THE IDEA OF AN OPEN BRIEF SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME... TO BE FRANK.

Refining the briefs:
